2024 European election: 1,413 candidates standing for election

In the European election on 9 June 2024, a total of 1,413 candidates will stand for the 96 European Parliament seats allocated to the Federal Republic of Germany. The Federal Returning Officer, Dr. Ruth Brand, reports that 486 candidates are women (share: 34.4%).

The Federal Returning Officer calls on all citizens to take part in the European election on 9 June 2024. She stresses that the European election is of special importance as it permits citizens to influence political decision-making within the European Union.

Altogether, 35 parties and other political associations will run in the 2024 European election with common lists for all Länder or with lists for individual Länder. In each Land, the ballot papers will carry the lists of the candidates nominated by 34 parties and political associations.

More detailed information on the parties and associations admitted and on the candidates and substitute candidates standing for election is provided in the publication "Die Wahlbewerberinnen und Wahlbewerber für die Wahl zum Europäischen Parlament aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland 2024". This publication also lists the names of all the candidates and substitute candidates and contains summary tables with information on the proportion of women, the age of the candidates and their occupational groups, for example.
