Press release no. 21/24 of 6. Mai 2024

2024 European election: application period for Germans abroad and citizens of other EU countries will end on 19 May

WIESBADEN – Germans living abroad and citizens of other European Union (EU) Member States living in Germany who intend to vote here can apply to be included in the electoral register until 19 May 2024. The Federal Returning Officer reports that by this date, everyone entitled to vote in the European election will receive a notification which also specifies the polling station where they can cast their vote on 9 June 2024.

Citizens who have not received a voter’s notification by 19 May 2024 and believe that they are entitled to vote should contact the electoral office at their main residence to have their eligibility checked. From 20 to 24 May 2024, eligible voters may inspect the electoral register during the normal opening hours of their municipal authority.

Germans living abroad

Before each European election, Germans living abroad who intend to vote in Germany have to file an application to be added to the electoral register of the municipality where they were last registered before leaving Germany. The relevant municipal authority must receive the application by 19 May 2024 at the latest. More detailed information and the relevant application form (“Antrag auf Eintragung in das Wählerverzeichnis von wahlberechtigten Deutschen, die im Ausland leben und Wahlscheinantrag“) are available on the website of the Federal Returning Officer.

Citizens of other EU countries

Citizens of other EU Member States who live in Germany and had been registered to vote in the 1999 European election or a later election to the European Parliament will automatically be included in the electoral register if, in the meantime, they have not been deleted from the register upon application or because they moved abroad. Therefore, they do not have to apply again to be added to the register. All others who want to vote for candidates from Germany in the 2024 European Election need to apply to the municipal authority of their German place of residence to be entered in the electoral register. The municipal authority must receive the application by 19 May 2024 at the latest.

More detailed information and the relevant application form (“Antrag für Unionsbürger auf Eintragung in das Wählerverzeichnis“) are available to Union citizens on the website of the Federal Returning Officer and from the municipal authority of their place of residence.
